Seventh Generation: Final Review

This will be my last review of the Seventh Generation products I received. For the last review I cleaned my kitchen but for this review I cleaned my bathroom. I tried out the Free & Clear Natural Glass & Surface Cleaner. It did a great job at cleaning my mirrors and windows. No streaks and no odor. It does exactly what it promises to do, plus with natural ingredients!

Here is what the Seventh Generation website has to say about the product:
Cleans without streaks and uses no harsh chemicals. Excellent for effectively cleaning glass, mirrors, chrome, and other hard surfaces around your home. Truly free and clear of fragrances, dyes, and masking agents.

I saved the Disinfecting products for the last review because they were the products I was the most excited to try. Like I have said previously. Some simple soap and water and a clean sponge works for me for many things but when I am cleaning a dirty bathroom, a kitchen counter that has had raw meat on it, or scrubbing the house down during flu season because everyone is sick I want a disinfectant! And now I know that there are natural products that will do the trick. I tried the Disinfecting Bathroom Spray, the Disinfecting Wipes - 35 ct., and the Disinfecting Multi-Surface Spray and I loved all three. My only complaint was the smell. They have a strong (but natural) odor to them, and since I like everything to be odorless that was a little hard to get used to, but it dissipates quickly and they do the job naturally.

According to the Seventh Generation Website they will kill 99.99% of germs including Influenza A. You can read more about the disinfecting line of products here.
If you want to try some Seventh Generation Products for yourself don't forget to enter the 11 Item Seventh Generation Free and Clear Starter Kit Giveaway if you haven't already!

Seventh Generation: More Reviews

I have already reviewed the Seventh Generation liquid laundry Detergent, liquid fabric softener, paper towels I received as part of the 11 Item Seventh Generation Free and Clear Starter Kit Giveaway I am hosting. Today I will concentrate on the products that I used to clean in the kitchen.

I LOVED the Free & Clear Natural Dish Liquid! I don't like overpowering smells and I have found many products that are supposed to be natural just have too much of an odor for me. There truly is no scent in this soap and it cleans dishes very well! In addition is comes in a bottle made with recycled plastic, here is what the Seventh Generation Website says about the product:

Our new improved formula cleans more dishes than ever, and comes in a new 25oz bottle made from 90% post-consumer recycled plastic. Everyone can pitch in on the dishes thanks to our safe, non-toxic formula.

Just like the dish soap I loved the Free and Clear Automatic Dishwasher Detergent Pacs. Again the first big feature for me was the lack of a smell! I am not brand specific on dishwasher detergent, but there is one brand of tabs that I get often for a good price with coupons and while I think it does a good job at cleaning the dishes I don't like that I can smell it while the dishwasher is running. These packs don't have a smell at all so that is not an issue for me! I felt they did an equal job at cleaning my dishes to any other brand I have tried. I love the convenience of using the tab, and I love the environmentally friendly features of this formula like being chlorine and phosphate free! Here is what the Seventh generation website had to say about the detergent pacs:

Gets your dishes sparkling clean and is gentle on the earth. These concentrated automatic dishwasher pacs deliver our phosphate and chlorine free formula in a convenient single-use pac.

Finally today I will review the Free & Clear Natural All Purpose Cleaner. I know many of us use natural homemade cleaners which can be cost effective. Personally in the kitchen I think the CLEAN sponge or cloth, soap and hot water is under rated, but that probably goes back to my strong dislike of strong smells and homemade cleaning products are often using vinegar. But for those of you who prefer store bought cleaning sprays I think this product is excellent. Truthfully, even if you prefer soap and water or a homemade cleaner there may be times when you prefer the convenience of a store bought product or you just need something stronger. At least in my home I never use one method all the time, I find a combination of methods works best for me. This cleaner was a great all purpose cleaner, it was effective at removing grease on my stove top, and dried spaghetti sauce on my counter after dinner. And it had no smell. As with all of the seventh generation products I have reviewed the environmental benefits are a huge plus! Here is what the Seventh Generation Website has to say about this product:

An all-around-the-home cleaner.Effectively cleans and degreases hard surfaces both inside and outside your home. Excellent for wet mopping. Not recommended for use on wood floors. Truly free and clear of fragrances, dyes, and masking agents

I will review the glass cleaner, disinfecting spray, and disinfecting wipes on Saturday. Don't forget to enter the 11 Item Seventh Generation Free and Clear Starter Kit Giveaway if you haven't already!

Seventh Generation Giveaway

I have blogged a lot about our family's switching from processed foods to a more whole foods approach, and about purchasing more and more organic meats, dairy, and produce as our budget will allow. All of this is because of an increased concern I have for our health and the heath of the world around us. It is spring cleaning time in our house (well its almost "summer cleaning"..we are a little behind schedule) and in the process I have really searched for ways to make the process healthier and greener. We are clearing out the clutter and cleaning in all those places where stuff just loves to hide! I have been researching greener cleaning methods for a few months, and trying out a few, some I like and some I don't, I will share what I have learned in a followup post. One thing I know for me and my house is I need/want to use commercial cleaners sometimes.

For example: I like knowing my kitchen counter is disinfected after I cooked with chicken! And even though I know others enjoy it, I don't want to make my own soap/laundry detergent, etc! So what is a girl who is trying to do the green thing but needs a few commercial cleaning products to do? Well I researched that and I came across Seventh Generation.

Here is their stated mission:
"From the very beginning, we've pushed to have a real impact on our competitors, suppliers, communities, and government. Products may be the vehicle, but far-reaching, genuine change is the mission."

You can read all of their goals here.

I was really impressed with Seventh Generation, so I contacted them about the possibility of a review/giveaway. They generously sent me their Free and Clear Starter Kit pictured above for review. It includes:
Disinfecting Multi-Surface Spray
Disinfecting Bathroom Spray
Disinfecting Wipes - 35 ct.
( The Disinfectants have Thymol sent (from Thyme oil). These are NOT considered free & clear, but they are great for immune-depressed households or those with small children)
Free and Clear Laundry Detergent –32 oz
Free and Clear Liquid Fabric Softener – 40 oz
Free and Clear Dish liquid
Free and Clear All- Purpose Cleaner
Free and Clear Auto-Dish Pacs
Glass Cleaner
Natural Paper Towels
Seventh Gen Recycled Bag

Plus Seventh Generation has generously offered to send one lucky Thrifty Jenny reader a Free and Clear Starter Kit of their own including all of the items above!

I have been reviewing each of the products and I think they really deserve some space of their own so I will post my reviews separately throughout the giveaway!

Boon Review and Giveaway (Ends 5/11)

Boon generously sent me their Groovy and Benders pictured above for review. The Groovy is an interlocking plate and bowl set where the 2 orange bowls are movable and removable. The Benders are adaptable utensils which bend so that you can adjust them to your needs as they are learning to use forks and spoons! Both are BPA, pvc ,and phtalate free!
I love Boon, their products are so clever and the are visually appealing too, which I think is really important (that is the art educator in me). I was really excited to try out the Groovy because of how well it separates the food (moms of picky toddlers all know how the food is not allowed to touch!) I also loved the idea of interactivity idea of the bowls both for myself in choosing how I would serve the food and for my kids. The Groovy lived up to all of my expectations and more! not only does it do all the things I listed above, but it has a non skid bottom which I thought was really great too and it is dishwasher safe on the top rack which is a must in my house. So this was a winner.

I was also super excited to try the benders out because I thought the concept was so unique! I have never seen bendable utensils before! My daughter uses utensils regularly but she still falls back on using her hands often, she turns the spoon or fork upside down half of the time, and she has difficulty with toddler sized utensils scooping out too big of bites. So for all of those reasons I thought this would be a great product to try with her! She seemed to like them, and dug right in using them correctly! They are smaller sized since they are intended to train babies to use toddler utensils so it is easier for her to get the right size bite. The are also dishwasher safe so I think they are winner!

Boon has several social media sites you can check out in addition to their website if you are interested in their products.

Giveaway: $35 Juffy Lube Gift Card (5/1)

Did you know April is both National Car Care and National Informed Women Month and a perfect opportunity to get empowered to care for your car! My Blog Spark and Shell Lubricants Sent me the $35 gift card pictured above to take my car in for an oil change and a lot of information to help me feel informed about the process! They are offering to send a $35 Jiffy Lube gift card to one lucky Thrifty Jenny reader!
I don't know about you but oil changes (and most car maintenance for that matter) is something I left up to my husband or my dad, but Pennzoil and Quaker State have created a really helpful website http://www.motoroilmatters.org/ so that you can easily locate key information about how quality motor oils can help prolong your engine´s life and improve overall efficiency, as well as help answer other questions you may have about motor oil.

The site also has an educational game for you to play called "M.O.M. Knows Best" where you can put your motor mind to the test with an interactive quiz. I scored a 100% so I guess I know more than I thought even though I am not the one who usually takes care of the oil changes!

My favorite fact from the website was what qualifies as severe driving. I know that for my car severe driving requires more frequent oil changes, but I did not know the real definition. Here it is:

What is considered severe driving?
Severe use typically includes stop-and-go driving, frequent high-speed driving and short trips. Towing, operating in dusty conditions and operating in cold and hot weather are also typically considered severe service.
You should review the severe service definition in your owner’s manual to determine the proper oil drain interval.

You can enter the giveaway in the following ways (up to 7 entries!):

*1 entry - Leave a coment telling me you would like to win
*1 entry- Leave a comment telling what your score on the M.O.M Knows Best Game was.
* 1entry -Leave a comment telling what fact you found most interesting on http://www.motoroilmatters.org/

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies

Betty Crocker and MyBlogSpark Sent me brownie mix, cookie mix and a betty crocker spoon as part of my stirring up wishes giveaway. Things are finally getting back to normal around here since my son's bout of pneumonia and we finally got a chance to try them out! I decided to make the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies from the Betty Crocker website (although I did leave off the frosting because I did not have it on hand). They turned out wonderful....in my husbands words "I could eat 7 of these!" and I saw him taking a rather large large piece for his lunch this morning!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies
Ingredients:
1 box Betty Crocker® Original Supreme brownie mix (with chocolate syrup pouch)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
2 eggs
1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker® chocolate chip cookie mix
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 egg
1 container Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy chocolate frosting
Instructions:
1.Heat oven to 350ºF. Spray bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray, or grease with shortening. Make brownie mix as directed on box, using oil, water and 2 eggs. Spread in pan.
2. Make cookie mix as directed on pouch, using butter and 1 egg. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls evenly onto brownie batter; press down lightly.
3. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool on cooling rack 30 minutes. Frost with frosting. For brownies, cut into 8 rows by 6 rows.
As a reminder Betty Crocker has teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and right now through April 15th they are running the Give $5, Get $5 promotion. Also don't forget that Betty Crocker products often have boxtops of education on them and my box of brownies also had a coupon inside. This will not be inside every box but if you buy one or you are the winner of the giveaway make sure you take a peek inside before you recycle your box!

These are defiantly a special treat for us not an every day snack, they are very rich, but they are oh so yummy!

Make-Ahead Buttermilk Mix - Biscuits

Last week (before we were sick) I told you I made the Make-Ahead Buttermilk Mix from the Organic Valley Recipes with the product Organic valley sent. We made the waffles as a weekend breakfast with it (read about it here), and we also tried the pancakes as a dinner (not on the same day- read about them here)! Well on Monday night we had a chicken and rice casserole and made biscuits from the mix. I have to be honest, we did not love these the way we did the pancakes and waffles, they came out dry and did not have much flavor. But I will say one thing, we are in the middle of potty training around here and there was a potty "emergency" during the baking so when I came back into the kitchen the timer had already gone off and the biscuits were a bit browner than I had expected, which could explain the dry texture. If you try this recipe and have better results please let us know!

On good thing was the European Style cultured butter we spread on them, that was delicious!

Here is the Mix and Biscuit recipe from the Organic Valley website you can check out the full recipe with the instructions for waffles and pancakes there too (we really loved both of those)!

Ingredients:

Buttermilk Mix:

1 cup Organic Valley Buttermilk Blend (dry buttermilk)
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
5 cups unbleached white flour
1/4 cup baking powder
1 tablespoon baking soda
2 teaspoons salt

For Biscuits:
3 cups Buttermilk Mix
6 tablespoons (3/4 of a stick) Organic Valley Butter, frozen
1 cup Organic Valley 1% or 2% milk

Instructions:
1. To make Buttermilk Mix: Place all ingredients in a large bowl; whisk well to distribute all the ingredients evenly. Store airtight

2. To make biscuits: Heat oven to 425 degrees. Place Buttermilk Mix in a large bowl. Using the largest holes on a hand-held grater, grate the frozen butter into the mix. Using a large fork, stir gently to incorporate the butter evenly. Stir in milk until mixture is barely combined. Using floured hands, gently shape 10-12 rough balls of dough and place them 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake until golden brown, 13-15 minutes. Make-Ahead Buttermilk Mix - Pancakes

Last week (before we were sick) I told you I made the Make-Ahead Buttermilk Mix from the Organic Valley Recipes with the product Organic valley sent. We made the waffels as a weekend breakfast with it (read about it here), and we also tried the pancakes as a dinner (not on the same day)! Since pancakes for dinner are really a treat in our house I made them extra special with chocolate chips! We all loved them, and if chocolate chips are not your thing another way I like to make pancakes extra special is to use a large cookie cutter to make fun shapes for the kids!

Here is the Mix and Pancake recipe from the Organic Valley website you can check out the full recipe with the instructions for waffles and biscuits there too!

Ingredients:

Buttermilk Mix:

1 cup Organic Valley Buttermilk Blend (dry buttermilk)
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
5 cups unbleached white flour
1/4 cup baking powder
1 tablespoon baking soda
2 teaspoons salt

For Pancakes:
2 cups Buttermilk Mix
1 1/2 cups Organic Valley Milk or water
2 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions:
1. To make Buttermilk Mix: Place all ingredients in a large bowl; whisk well to distribute all the ingredients evenly. Store airtight

2. To make pancakes: Heat a cast-iron stove top griddle over medium-low flame. Place Buttermilk Mix in a bowl. Stir in milk or water and oil until barely combined. Film the hot griddle with cooking oil. Pour 1/3 cup or so of batter onto griddle for each pancake. (You can sprinkle on berries, nuts, etc. on at this point if you’d like). When bubbles appear over most of the batter surface and the undersides are golden brown, flip the pancakes to cook the other side. Serve with maple syrup and toppings of your choice.

Make-Ahead Buttermilk Mix

Last week I made the Make-Ahead Buttermilk Mix for Pancakes, Waffles and Biscuits with the powdered Butter milk Organic Valley sent me. You can see the recipe featured on the Organic Valley website here.

Ingredients:
Buttermilk Mix:

1 cup Organic Valley Buttermilk Blend (dry buttermilk)

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour

5 cups unbleached white flour

1/4 cup baking powder

1 tablespoon baking soda

2 teaspoons salt

Instructions:
To make Buttermilk Mix:

Place all ingredients in a large bowl; whisk well to distribute all the ingredients evenly.

Store airtight.

I stored mine in a container that was meant to store dry cereal and I taped the recipe and instruction printout to the front.

Then for breakfast this weekend we made the buttermilk waffle recipe and had the Prairie Valley bacon that was leftover from our frittata. They were wonderful! I especially liked this make ahead buttermilk mix because it is shelf stable. A different brand of buttermilk powder I have used for a homemade buttermilk mix recipe required refrigeration, which was not a huge deal, but I do like this powder & recipe better!

Again this info comes from the Organic Valley web site and you can see the full instructions for the mix, the waffles, pancakes, and biscuits here!

Ingredients:

For Waffles:

2 cups Buttermilk Mix

2 tablespoons Organic Valley Butter, melted

2 large or extra large Organic Valley Eggs

1 1/4 cups Organic Valley 2% Milk

Instructions:

To make waffles:

Heat a waffle iron. Place Buttermilk Mix in a bowl. Mix butter, eggs and milk in a second bowl. Stir wet mixture into dry mixture until barely combined. Prepare waffles according to waffle iron manufacturer’s directions. Serve with maple or fruit syrup and toppings of your choice.
